The Apple Tree delivery model, called “community collaboration practice,” was featured in the Journal of the California Dental Association as “a sustainable, patient-centered approach to overcoming barriers to care across the lifespan.” The July and August issues of the CDA Journal were devoted to the oral health of older adults, emphasizing the challenges faced by individuals and an oral health care system that is generally ill prepared for the silver tsunami of older adults. Both issues were developed and guest edited byDick Gregory, DDS,who completed a two-year geriatric dentistry fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco and serves as Apple Tree’s San Mateo Center Director. The August issue featured the story about Apple Tree, written by Policy Director Deborah Jacobi, RDH, MA and CEO Michael Helgeson, DDS.  San Mateo County has the fastest growing population of elders in the country with an estimated 92,000 senior citizens of whom 30% are eighty-five and older.  The CDA Journal, Peninsula Health Care District, and Sequoia Healthcare District have recognized Apple Tree a model program that helps overcome many of the barriers to care faced by older adults.
